Two engaged brides to be walk along the redwood lined pathway in Prairie Creek Redwoods Park

Laid-Back Engagement Style in the redwoods

Humboldt County, California

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is my favorite forest location for engagement sessions, elopements and intimate weddings. Towering trees aside, what I love most about the area is that even on a very busy day, it’s hard to feel hemmed in by fellow park goers as there is just. so. much. space. Yes, it does help to have a playbook of out of the way trails on hand.

Stephanie and Lauren had camped in the redwoods together before they were engaged and knew it would make the perfect location for their pre-wedding portrait session.

What to know about a redwoods engagement session

Best time of year for your Redwoods Engagement Session

This depends heavily on the vibe and feel you’d like for your images. If you connect with The Craft and/or Friedrich’s Wanderer Above the Sea Fog, late October through April will bring a likelihood of atmospheric enhancement a.k.a. rain, fog or mist. This time of year sees a significant drop in visitor traffic to the redwoods parks as most folks prefer to keep on the sunny side of the street.

If you are one of those folks, mid May to about the first week in October are your safest bets for temperate weather. You can find more redwoods elopement information here.

You might want to make time for the beach

Humboldt County has an amazing assortment of coastal locations from craggy rocks to sweeping dunes and expansive mirrored tides that I recommend couples make time to soak up just a little of that salt air whenever possible. A second location is also the ideal opportunity for a second outfit.

Celebrate your personal style

Save the fleece for sitting around the campfire. That said, please bring aforementioned fleece and any other weather appropriate jacket to toss on if the temps drop in the trees. Always a good idea to have a warm up layer that we can stash in a fern for a few minutes as needed.
